Upcoming 10K is sign of fitness commitment

0 Comments | Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Nov 19, 2009

There’s no doubt I’ve had a rough go at it lately when it comes to my weight.

My “skinny” clothes — ones I wore months ago — no longer fit. Now some of my chubbier clothes are tight. I’m making excuses not to go places — not because I don’t want to see people, but because I don’t want to be seen.

But even with my struggles and though we’re now entering the danger zone for diets — season’s eatings, everyone! — I’m feeling something I haven’t while I’ve been re-finding my lost pounds.

Hope. Excitement. Motivation.

There is a spark inside of me still, and I’m about to pour some gasoline on it. I’m ready to explode back into feeling fit, trim and good about myself.

But getting to that point is going to require me feeling some pain.

The kind of pain you get when you push your body outside of its comfort zone, when you work yourself into a drenching sweat and make your lungs scream for oxygen and your legs cry for a break.

And I’m not just talking about going Christmas shopping. That’s painful, for sure. But the pain I’m talking about is a good pain.

I’m signing up today for a 10K.

Not sure whether I should laugh, cry or put a doctor on my speed dial.

Training for the race on Jan. 30 kind of began last week when I reintroduced my feet to my running shoes and tortured myself and a treadmill for a 45-minute slow burn. But my 2 1/2-month program begins in earnest this week. As in, NOW!

I’d considered a half-marathon in St. George this winter, but I’ve been so inactive for the past four months after doing several 5Ks in triathlons this summer that I think a 10K race will be smarter and more realistic.

Plus, I love the name of the race I’m going to participate in — the “Hale Freezes Over 10K.”

Most of my life, I would’ve figured an event that sounded like that would be what it’d take for me to attempt running a distance farther than the space between my couch and my refrigerator.

The race organizer, the Hale Center Theater in Orem, even jokes on its Web site that there are two types of people — “those who truly enjoy running and those who will only go running when you- know-where freezes over.”

I certainly don’t belong in the “enjoys running” category. I kinda hate it, honestly. My runner’s high usually happens when I’m done running.

But I do love what happens to my body when I run. Last year when I started doing it for the first time in decades while training for triathlons, it really boosted my weight-loss efforts. I got my exercise in and I knew how hard it was to burn off 200 calories, so I was much better at watching what I ate. Trust me, calories go into the body a whole lot faster than they go out.

Thing is, if I don’t try something like this and I continue on the course I’ve been going down, I’ll likely weigh 20 or so pounds more than I do now by the time race day rolls around. Knowing my tendency to gobble down holiday grub and goodies, it could even be more than that.

But if I can — make that WHEN I DO — stick to my plan of running three to four times a week and eating healthfully for the next 10 weeks, imagine how great I’ll feel — at least after the run through snow and slush is done.

Running will be a struggle, though, especially the next few weeks, but I am excited to regain control of my body and my life.

I know it’s popular to resolve to make change on Jan. 1

Dropping AT&T.;(FEEDBACK)(Letter to the editor)

Macworld, December, 2009 by Harper, Matt

Since the launch of the iPhone 3GS, my AT&T; service has steadily degraded. The majority of my calls are dropped, and when they aren’t dropping, they’re full of static. Often my phone won’t even ring when people call. After two years of using my iPhone as my only phone, I called Comcast and got a Voice-over-IP line

Insurance a Requirement for Any Boat or Yacht Using British Waterways

Market Wire, November, 2009

As part of national boat checks, the British Waterways are set to crack down on all unlicensed boat owners, whether yachts, motor boats, sailboats or narrow boats. If caught, boats will be seized and consequently destroyed or sold.

The organisation raises around Pounds Sterling 20 million per year from boat owners for the maintenance of footpaths, locks, bridges as well as dredging waterways. The rest of the money required for this essential maintenance is generated from taxpayers.

Employees from the British Waterways will be patrolling river banks monitoring boats; just like the police they will be using hand held computers to scan boats to determine whether or not they are licensed. With license fees starting from just Pounds Sterling 83 and with many discounts available, the organisation see that there is no reasonable excuse not to conform to their licensing rules.

In order to purchase a license, it is essential that the boat owner is in possession of an insurance policy from a company authorised by the FSA, with third party coverage of at least Pounds Sterling 1 million

Sales of Award-Winning USB Device EcoStrip Helps International NGO Wherever the Need Battle Sanitation Crisis

Business Wire, Nov 20, 2009

EcoStrip Announces Partnership with Wherever The Need to Not Only
Help Save the Earth, but to Also Help Save Lives

MARINA DEL RAY, Calif. — Green electronics firm EcoStrip today announced a partnership with
international sanitation non-profit Wherever the Need to donate $2 for
every EcoStrip 2.0 USB controlled power strip sold online at www.ecostrip.com.
Beginning Nov. 19th and continuing through Thanksgiving 2009
the donations will go toward building eco-sanitation toilets in
impoverished communities throughout the world where they are needed most.

The USB 2.0 EcoStrip is a power strip that eliminates the flow of energy
to computer peripherals when the computer is turned off, eliminating
active and passive electricity flows to printers, scanners, modems,
speakers, and stand-by lights. The device saves consumers money on their
monthly electric bills, conserves energy and reduces its users carbon
footprints. The product won Carlyle Associates 2007 Green Product Gold
Standard Award.

As a company, EcoStrip has always been dedicated to social causes,
said Kameron Nesen, Publicist for EcoStrip. Were thrilled that this
partnership gives us a chance to support Wherever the Needs crucial
mission. Consumers who buy our USB power strip not only help save money
and reduce their use of electricity, but also enable us to give back
some of our profit to a great cause.

Now, more than ever, the sanitation crisis needs urgent international
support, said Beverly Visty-Doman, Executive Director of Wherever the
Need USA. With 2.6 billion people worldwide lacking access to proper
sanitation, and thousands dying each day, most of them children,
EcoStrips support is a huge asset to us. Were very excited to work
with them.

The announcement coincides with World Toilet Day, an international
effort dedicating November 19th to raising money and
awareness to the sanitation crisis. Wherever the Need expects the
EcoStrip partnership to play a large role in the charitys November
fundraising efforts.

Donations can be made at www.wherevertheneed.org
or with purchase of an EcoStrip at www.ecostrip.com

State of the art: Blu-ray on the Mac.(Create)

Macworld, December, 2009 by Galbraith, James

Blu-ray Disc may have beaten out HD-DVD in the pitched battle to be the high-definition optical-drive standard, but in the nearly two years since the format wars ended, Blu-ray has yet to gain any real traction in the desktop computer realm. In fact, Apple has done its best to downplay the relevance of any kind of optical drive in this new world of streaming media–the MacBook Air ships without an internal optical drive, Apple has almost totally ignored its DVD Studio Pro application in the last two Final Cut Studio releases, and the company provides no way of playing Blu-ray-formatted movies on Macs running OS X.

But while Apple hasn’t exactly embraced Blu-ray, a couple of the company’s applications–Final Cut Pro and Compressor–now allow you to create…

Radar Logic Expresses Cautious Optimism for the Housing Market

Radar Logic Expresses Cautious Optimism for the Housing Market

Market Wire, November, 2009

Non-distressed homes are selling at rates and
prices that are stronger than history would predict for this time of year,
according to the September 2009 RPX Monthly Housing Market Report released
today by Radar Logic Incorporated. But the 25-MSA RPX Composite dipped
sharply in September due to an increase in sales of distressed homes and a
decline in prices received for distressed homes. Nevertheless, the
Composite’s decline in September came after four months of above-average
growth, and its performance year-to-date remains strong relative to the
last three years.

“The three- and six-month trends in the RPX Composite through mid-September
were the strongest we’ve seen since 2005,” said Quinn Eddins, Radar Logic’s
Director of Research. “Prices for non-foreclosed homes held up well in
September relative to the last few years but that strength was not
reflected in the RPX Composite due to a 27% increase in foreclosure sales.
Sales of foreclosed homes increased from 21% of total sales to 26% and
consequently the RPX Composite decreased 3.1% month-over-month, which is
more than typical for this time of year.”

“Clearly the reduction in home prices that has occurred over the last few
years has brought buyers back to the housing market,” said Michael Feder,
President and CEO of Radar Logic. “The real question now is what the impact
of prospective foreclosures will be and what lenders and Washington will do
to try to ease that trend. All else being equal, housing appears to be
returning to normal, but foreclosures will be critical to the near term
results.”

Key Observations of the September 2009 RPX Monthly Housing Market Report:

-- Trends in home prices and home sales in September were stronger than
one would expect given the historical trends for this time of year. The 25-
MSA RPX Composite price dipped sharply in the month ending September 17,
but this decline came after four months of above-average growth. As a
result, the three- and six-month growth trends for the Composite were
stronger this September than they have been in any September since 2005.

-- The 25-MSA RPX transaction count increased 1.5% between mid-August and
mid-September, contrary to the expected seasonal pattern. It was the first
time that the 25-MSA transaction count increased during this time of year
since the beginning of Radar Logic's data set in 2000
